News-and-Society The Akshaya Patra Foundation provides food for hungry children in India through its mid-day meal programme. The Foundation exemplifies the role of NGO in India through its work of providing wholesome food to underserved children, thereby alleviating their hunger and providing an incentive for them to attend schools. The .anisation which was launched in the year 2000 started with feeding 1,500 children across 5 schools in Bengaluru. In the past 15 years the Foundation has grown to feeding over 1.4 million children across 10,845 schools in India. Operating through its 24 kitchen units spread over 10 states in the country, the .anisation is now well on its way to achieving its mission of feeding 5 million children by 2020. Born with the vision that No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger, Akshaya Patra, through its work of providing food for hungry children in India aims to eliminate classroom hunger. The NGO role in India is to work towards the betterment of society, and the Foundation has been steadfast in this cause. Scalability and sustainability are crucial factors to the success of the .anisation and this has been achieved through the support of the Government of India to a large extent. By adopting a Public Private Partnership model, the Foundation has received a great deal of financial aid from the Government, allowing it to reach out and provide nutritious food to more children. The .anisation has also received a great deal of financial aid as well as support through sharing of expertise and experience from corporates and donors across the country. Without this wholehearted support, this success would not have been possible. The role of NGO in India is to work for those in need. The .anization does this every day by championing the cause of children across the country. By providing the wholesome meals every day in a healthy, hygienic manner, the Foundation provides not just much needed nutrition to the children, but also provides them with an incentive to attend school regularly. Drawn by the call of the tasty food, the children also attend class and get educated too. This has helped thousands of children get in touch with their aspirations and work towards achieving success in the future.
